How to get a local business mentioned in AI answers

ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews now answer 'who's the best near me' questions. Here's what makes them pick your business.

Ask ChatGPT "who's a good physical therapist in Northport?" and you'll get an answer with names in it. More and more customers start there instead of scrolling ten blue links. So the question for a local business is simple: how do you become one of the names?

There's no secret switch. AI assistants build their answers from what they can find and trust on the web. Your job is to make sure the facts about your business are easy to find, consistent everywhere, and backed up by other people.

1. Get your facts straight everywhere

AI tools cross-check. If your hours, phone number or address differ between your website, Google, Yelp and Apple Maps, the assistant has less reason to trust any of them.

  • Make your Google Business Profile complete: categories, services, hours, photos, and a description that says plainly what you do and where.
  • Claim Bing Places and Apple Business Connect. Several assistants lean on search indexes other than Google's.
  • Fix old listings on Yelp, BBB and industry directories so they match exactly.

2. Write pages that answer the question

An assistant quoting you needs a sentence worth quoting. Pages that work well:

  • One page per main service, saying who it's for, where you offer it, what it costs or how pricing works, and how to book.
  • A short FAQ with the real questions customers ask on the phone.
  • An About page with real people, years in business and credentials.

Vague lines like "we provide quality solutions" give an AI nothing to repeat.

3. Add structured data

Schema markup tells machines what your page means: that this is a LocalBusiness, here's its phone number, here are its opening hours, here are its services. It's invisible to visitors and it removes guesswork for every crawler that reads your site.

4. Let the crawlers in

Some websites block AI crawlers in robots.txt without the owner knowing, often through a security plugin or a template default. If you want to show up in AI answers, check that you aren't blocking the search crawlers of the assistants your customers use.

5. Earn mentions from other people

Reviews, local news, a supplier's "where to buy" page, a sponsorship page for the Little League team. AI assistants weigh what others say about you, not only what you say about yourself.

How to check where you stand

Once a month, ask the main assistants the questions your customers ask, with your town in them. Write down who gets mentioned. It's crude, but it shows you whether things are moving.
